Word of the Week: Farfalle

By April 15, 2016 , , , , ,

Today's word of the week is farfalle!

As you can probably guess, farfalle is a type of noodle.

It is one of an estimated 350 types of pasta that exists around the world. It is also known as "bow-tie pasta" thanks to its shape. However, its shape also hints at the history of the word itself.

The word farfalle comes from the Italian word farfalla, meaning butterfly. Did you know that this kind of pasta dates to as far back as the 16th century?!

Pasta shapes are designed to hold the sauce in the best way possible. Just like wine, each region in Italy has its own recipes and has created specific pasta shapes to best suit the sauce. Its place of origin is Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna in Northern Italy. Farfalle is often best suited for cream and tomato dishes.
