Happy Halloween from La Piazza Dario!

And below, discover more about fall Italian tradition, All Souls Day.

Although Halloween is not traditionally celebrated by Italian culture, it is becoming more and more popular in Italy these days. Many Italians are now choosing to show their Halloween spirit (pun intended!) by dressing up and attending events and costume parties, taking place on October 31st. Certain towns in Italy are going so far as to say that they are the Italian capital of Halloween, such as the medieval town of Corinaldo, which puts on la festa di Halloween during the last week of October.

The more traditional days of celebration in Italy during this time of year, however, remain to be All Saints Day, which occurs on November 1st, a day that honours the saints of the Catholic calendar, and All Souls Day, which takes place the following day on November 2nd and honours the deceased. These two days of celebration have roots in Catholic traditions, however, All Souls Day is more about celebrating and honouring the departed, a day when many people in Italy believe that their deceased loved ones will visit them. All Souls Day or Giorno dei Morti, which in Italian literally translates to Day of the Dead, is a day when a large number of Italians clean and decorate graves to honour and remember the dead. While fairly different from the North American concept of Halloween, there are some similarities to be drawn between the two in relation to the topic of spirits and ghosts!

We wish you a safe and happy Halloween!

Join us this weekend for dinner after you and your family is all candied-out from trick-or-treating!

We love Italy any time of the year, but here are a few reasons that make Italian autumns extra special!

We love our adopted home of Vancouver in the fall as well, but Italy will always hold an extra special place in our hearts. After all, it's the mother country, the birthday place of our delicious cuisines and meals that we lovingly create and share with you at La Piazza Dario!

So without further ado, here are our fall favourites about Italy!

1. Italian Sagre

Autumn in Italy is the time of sagre, or festivals celebrating local food and wine! These festivals pop up all over the country and celebrate one of the most renowned contributions to human cultures: food! What better way to enjoy Italy than by attending a food festival. You can truly get a taste of Italy…literally!

2. Harvest Time

Much of the ingredients that make Italian food so delicious are being harvested during this season: olives, white truffles, almonds, and chestnuts to name a few. Why not get your hands dirty and participate in an olive harvest?!

3. Cool Weather

Summers can get hot. Really hot. Although summer has its own virtues, it can be a difficult time to explore when you find yourself putting all your energy into staying cool and hydrating! Autumn boast some of the most perfect weather-wise days, with cooler temperatures making it an enjoyable time to walk around and explore.

4. Fall Colours

Along with that cooler temperature, comes the stunning fall colours of the Italian countryside. It's true we get some fabulous seasonal colours here on the West Coast but hey! It's Italy!

5. Fewer Crowds, Lower Costs

It's one of the best times to travel to Italy, and practically anywhere for these two reasons: fewer crowds and lower costs. Why not get the Italian experience with less of a dent in your wallet?!

Until then, however, come join us for a delicious dinner that will send your taste buds to Italy! We guarantee you will enjoy every last bite!

On October 25th, come celebrate World Pasta Day with La Piazza Dario!

October is a wonderful time of year to indulge in your favourite Italian dishes. All at once hearty, comforting and delicious, a good plate of pasta can warm you up even on the coldest fall day. Which is why it makes so much sense that World Pasta Day is celebrated during this transitional month between summer and autumn! It's a little something to look forward too as the warm weather fades away and we begin to remember what it's like to feel chilly.

This year, World Pasta Day falls on Saturday October 25th; an ideal night to take a break from your kitchen and join us for a plate or two of Chef Claudio Ranallo's authentic, mouthwatering pasta. So, at the end of this month if you're in Vancouver, we hope that you will come celebrate the weekend and World Pasta Day with us at La Piazza Dario!

Embrace the changing weather and join us tonight for a delicious bowl of Italian seafood chowder.

As the short work week draws to a close, we'd love to help you celebrate the weekend and embrace the changing seasons with some delicious Italian food, created by none other than our wonderful Head Chef, Claudio Ranallo. It may not be autumn yet, nor is the weather quite cold enough for those fall coats and scarves, yet there's something in the air reminding us that fall is just around the corner. The air is a bit brisker and the sun doesn't feel quite as hot.

Let us warm you up with one of our seasonal dishes, zuppa di pesce, a seafood chowder filled to the brim with crab, mussels, prawns, calamari and salmon and finished off with a tomato broth. Hearty and delicious, this is the perfect dish to cozy up to around this time of year.

Make reservations for tonight online via OpenTable or by calling 604.430.2195. If you can't join us tonight, don't wait too long - this seasonal dish won't be on our menu forever!
